Gérard Castello-Lopes (6 August 1925 – 12 February 2011) was one of the main exponents of humanist photography in Portugal. He began photographing in the early 1950s. Influenced by the work of Henri Cartier-Bresson, it endeavours to represent the living conditions in Portugal under the dictatorship of António de Oliveira Salazar. Initially an amateur, he did not become famous until the early 1980s, with several exhibitions, notably at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon (1986). At that time, he radically changed his style to turn to a less social and more plastic photography. Gérard Castello-Lopes - Portugal, 1956
